When may I drop off and pick up my dancer?

Students may be dropped off any time between five and fifteen minutes prior to the scheduled start of their class, and should be picked up as soon as possible after their class is finished as NLSD does not have staff to supervise children waiting for pick up. When you arrive for pick up please come into the school to pick up your child in order to prevent unaccompanied children in the parking lot.

What does 'Intensive' mean and how is this Program different?

The purpose of the Intensive Program is to have a more committed, competitive, and pre-professional environment for motivated dancers willing to commit to a full dance schedule. Each level of Intensive has class and performance requirements dancers must meet. To learn more, click here. Classes with 'Intensive' in the name are for dancers in the according Intensive level only - to enroll into   any   Intensive class you   must   receive recommendation from an NLSD instructor.

Why is it required for Intensive dancers to take 2 Ballet classes?

A common question we get from families with dancers in our Intensive Program is why we have the requirement of two Ballet classes. This is due to the significant strength, technique, and discipline training involved in Ballet which ultimately supports the purpose of our Intensive Programs - commitment, self-discipline, competition, and a pre-professional training environment. Taking two ballet classes is therefore required for all Intensive levels.

How are decisions made as to what dance level students are placed in?

For enrolling into our non-Intensive Programs, select classes based on your dancers age. From there, we can consider a mix of other criteria including: technique, attitude, skill development, and years of dance training. Dancers may be subsequently moved to a different level. For Tap, Acro, and Broadway classes, students usually, but not always, progress each year as their skills progress.

To enroll into our Intensive Program, dancer's must receive NLSD instructor recommendation for both the Program itself and level number. If you have questions regarding class placement or you are unsure of your dancer's level, please click "Contact us!" above!

Is there a winter temperature cut off for classes?

We will cancel all classes for the day if at 8:00 am the temperature is -40C° or colder on the Environment Canada weather site.
While NLSD will attempt to contact every family via email in this situation, we urge students and parents to email info@nlsdyukon.com to confirm the status of classes if there are any doubts. We will try to update our voicemail with any cancellations or closures as we are made aware.

How should dancers dress for classes?

Proper attire and hygiene is an essential part of dance training, and helps both the dancer and their peers feel comfortable and prepared for classes and performances. The required dance attire and recommended colours help our instructors by allowing them to better see: how each individual moves, body line and contour, muscle movement, etc.

  • Hair must be secured back off the face and neck for all classes
  • No jeans, boxer shorts, long shirts or sock feet will be permitted in class
  • Students can wear small pieces of jewellery, but no chunky or dangling jewellery is allowed
  • Students who are inappropriately dressed may not be permitted to participate in class

Are parents expected to volunteer

Yes! We could not produce our annual perfromances without the help and support of our amazing parent volunteers. We ask that you please keep an eye out for any emails or other calls for volunteers, especially as performance times approach!

Are parents expected to help with fundraisers?

Yes! Our fundraising is not only necessary in order to continue our high quality programming offered by qualified and passionate instructors, but to help keep registration and costume fees reasonable. We rely on our fundraising efforts and try to keep these demands to a minimum.

Can parents join the Volunteer Board of Directors?

Yes! NLSD's annual general meeting is held after the June 30 fiscal year end, typically in the fall. If you’re interested in joining our board, please email board@nlsdyukon.com!

How can I pay?
