Come Dance With Me!

Move, create, and play with your little one in this guided class! Come engage in this once a week, 30 minute session, taught by one of our senior dancers. This class helps introduces dance through directed play, story-telling, obstacle courses, and set exercises that encourage creative movement!
  • Ages 2/3 
  • Parent participation required
  • Offered in two terms: Term 1 runs from September to December, and Term 2 runs from January to May
  • Once a term there is an opportunity for dancers to perform in-studio, this is done during regular scheduled class time; usually during the last class of term:
Term 1 (December)
    • Nutcracker Dance Party - in-studio parent viewing opportunity during the last class of Term 1 in December
Term 2 (May)
    • Spring Dance Party - in-studio parent viewing opportunity during the last class of Term 2 in May

Primary

Introducing the concepts of space, direction, and timing through directed play, story-telling, improvisation, and set exercises that encourage creative movement. 
  • Ages 3 to 5
  • Offered in two terms: Term 1 runs from September to December, and Term 2 runs from January to May
  • There are 2 performance opportunities a Term:
Term 1 (December)
    • The Nutcracker (must be 3 years or older to audition) - at the Yukon Arts Centre 
    • Nutcracker Dance Party - in-studio parent viewing opportunity during the last class of Term 1 in December
Term 2 (May)
    • Year-End Ballet - at the Yukon Arts Centre
    • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - at the Yukon Arts Centre

First Steps

Dancers can begin their first steps into formal dance training with our 2 fusion class options: Ballet/Tap and Broadway/Jazz. Explore one, or both classes, and expand your dancer's love for dance! 
  • Ages 6/7, unless otherwise recommended by NLSD Staff 
  • Dance shoes required: both Ballet and Tap shoes for the Ballet/Tap fusion, and Jazz shoes for the Broadway/Jazz fusion class
  • Dancers will start to learn basic movements of Ballet, Jazz, and Tap, as well as develop their performance confidence with Broadway 
  • There are 3 performance opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
    • The Nutcracker (must be enrolled in a Ballet/Tap class to audition) - December 
    • Year-End Ballet - May
    • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - May

Novice

Dancers can expand their technical training while also strengthening their performance quality and confidence. Explore our available Novice level classes and diversify your dancer's love for dance!
  • Ages 8/9, unless otherwise recommended by NLSD staff
  • There are 3 performance opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
    • The Nutcracker (must be enrolled in a Ballet class to audition) - December

    Elementary

    Dancers can expand their technical training while also strengthening their performance quality and confidence. Explore our available Elementary level classes and diversify your dancer's love for dance!
    • Ages 10 /11, *unless otherwise recommended by NLSD staff
    • There are 3 performance opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
      • The Nutcracker (must be enrolled in a Ballet class to audition) - December

    Intermediate

    Dancers can expand their technical training while also strengthening their performance quality and confidence. Pre-teens looking to build dance experience and skill, this class environment is specifically designed for you!
    • Ages 12/13, *unless otherwise recommended by NLSD staff
    • There are 3 performance opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
      • The Nutcracker (must be enrolled in a Ballet class to audition) - December
      • Year-End Ballet - May
      • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - May

    Wanting to try Pointe? 
    Before purchasing pointe shoes dancers must
    1) Be 12+ years old
    2) Request a foot exam/assessment to be performed by the instructor
    3) Be registered in at least 4 weekly classes (one being Pre-Pointe/Pointe 1)

    *If you are a new student to our school and have previous dance experience, please contact us for a placement assessment!

    Senior

    • Ages 14 to 18, *unless otherwise recommended by NLSD staff

      • The Nutcracker (must be enrolled in a Ballet class to audition) - December

      • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - May

    Men's Program

    Our Novice, Elementary, Intermediate, Senior, and Intensive programming is available to male dancers, ages 8 to 18. Free dance tuition is offered in our Men's Program, but dancers must be enrolled in at least one of our Ballet classes.

    Adult Classes

    Are you an experienced dancer, just starting out, or somewhere in between? Our adult class offers an inclusive and welcoming environment for mature dancers of any skill level!
    • Ages 19+
    • There are 3 performance *opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
      • The Nutcracker (must inquire) - December
      • Year-End Ballet - May
      • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - May
    *Due to the size of our Adult classes these performance opportunities may not always be available - please inquire with your instructor!

    How is the Intensive Program different? 

    *To enroll into any Intensive classes you must be recommended by an NLSD instructor.

     Any student dancing with NLSD can expect superior dance instruction provided by our passionate and experienced staff, as well as a welcoming environment  promoting strength and technique building, respect, and support. Our Intensive Program differs from our Recreational Programs by offering a more competitive and pre-professional training environment for those displaying promising technical abilities, a hard-working attitude, and motivation in class and rehearsals - as well as wanting to dedicate to a full dance schedule.     Intensive 1 Program  

    For dancers seeking to immerse themselves into intensive dance training and a full schedule! Must be recommended by NLSD staff to enroll in our intensive programs, recommendations are based on dancer's technical abilities, attitude, and motivation in class and rehearsals, rather than age.

    Dancers in our intensive programs are REQUIRED to: 
    • Enroll into a minimum of 4 classes: an Intensive 1 Ballet, Intensive 1 Jazz, and at least 2 other classes of the dancer’s choice
    • Attend all audition, performance, and workshop opportunities throughout the dance season
    • Attend all scheduled Sunday rehearsals throughout the dance season
    • Perform in our 3 main performance opportunities a season presented on the Yukon Arts Centre Main Stage:
      • The Nutcracker (must audition) - December
      • Year-End Ballet - May
      • Year-End Contemporary Showcase - May
    • Enter into their allotted ballet exam, to be completed in our NLSD studios, in February (additional fees are required)

    Travel and other opportunities for intensive dancers:
    •  Prince George (PG) Dance Festival in March (13+)
    • Dance and the Child International (daCi) conference every 3 years (involvement is dependent on dancer's age and technical ability)
    • NLSD's The Nutcracker performance in Dawson
    • Multiple additional performance, media, and photo-shoot opportunities throughout the dance season
    • Community Shows

    Summer Programming

    Register Now!
    We offer a variety of week-long day camps throughout June, July, and August! Registration is open to all, regardless of dance skill or level - please enroll according to your child's age!
    • Week long camps (no camps on statutory holidays)
    • Running from June to August
    • Dance styles covered include Ballet, Pre-pointe/Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Broadway, and more! 
    • Crafts, park time at Jack Hulland, DIY props and accessories, movies, dance games and more!
    Offered on occasion:
    • Half-day summer camps are offered for ages 3-5
    • Half-day Nutcracker Bootcamp in August for ages 7+
